SAO MIGUEL ISLAND – PONTA DELGADA

Welcome to the island of Sao Miguel, known as the vibrant Atlantic Garden thanks to its lush surroundings! Our island adventure begins with a welcome meeting that takes place at the hotel at 18:00!

There are no meals included on this day. Airport transfer not included. Your island adventure begins with a welcome meeting that takes place at your hotel at 18:00. Please have your insurance details and next of kin information ready to pass on to your leader during this meeting. It is important that you attend this meeting, so if you do not plan to do so, please inform the reception or your travel agent.

day 2

SAO MIGUEL ISLAND – PONTA DELGADA

Our tour discovering the Azores Islands starts from Sao Miguel which is home to breathtaking landscapes! We visit the pineapple plantation of Arruda located at Faja de Baixo. We move towards Furnas and are amazed by its volcano and the large lagoon! We have lunch at Cozido das Furnas and after lunch, we can choose to take a relaxing dip in a warm geothermal pool (optional activity). We reach the fabulous viewpoint of Picodo Ferro and stop at a local tea plantation for a tour and to taste some of the unique teas grown in Europe. Finally, we visit Miradouro de Santa Iria, where we can immerse ourselves in extensive views of the island's northern coast.

day 3

SAO JORGE ISLAND – VELAS

The tour discovering the Azores continues with a free morning in the magical Sao Miguel! We could choose to visit Lagoa das Sete Cidades, an emerald green lake in a volcanic caldera. We can visit the Carlos Machado Museum which is located in an ancient 16th-century convent. In the afternoon, we board a direct flight to the island of Sao Jorge, one of the most scenic islands of the Azores thanks to its steep cliffs and narrow landmass. In the evening, you could get to know Velas, the island's capital, by visiting one of the many local bars or tasting the famous (and strong) regional cheddar.

While your flight should depart from Sao Miguel in the afternoon, please note that the flight schedule is subject to change. Also note that Sao Jorge is quite remote even by Azores standards, and accommodation options are limited. We stay in a locally owned guesthouse and, although it is clean and conveniently located in Velas, please be aware that the rooms are basic and do not have air conditioning.

day 4

SAO JORGE ISLAND – VELAS

We start the day with a visit to a local bakery to grab a tasty snack before continuing our journey to discover the Island with a hiking excursion to the spectacular Caldeira do Santo Cristo. We begin our walk at Serra do Topo and climb up a wide trail upwards. We will have the opportunity to detour towards a beautiful waterfall, then continue along a cobblestone path towards Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo. We follow the trail until we reach the natural debris field of Fajã dos Cubres.

Today's hike is about 10 km and will take you through loose rocks and uneven surfaces. Your leader will be able to update you on the details of the walk, but if you have any doubts, you can always opt out of the hike!

day 5

FAIAL ISLAND – HORTA

Join us as we journey to the enchanting island of Faial via ferry, where we'll explore the awe-inspiring Capelinhos volcano. This volcano, which last erupted in 1957, forever altered the landscape of the island, adding an additional kilometer of land and blanketing the vicinity with five meters of volcanic ash. After our visit, you'll have the remainder of the day to delve into the charming port town of Horta and uncover its rich maritime past.

day 6

PICO ISLAND – FAIAL ISLAND – HORTA

We leave Faial to visit Ilha do Pico, also known as the black island for its black volcanic soil. We explore the island's volcanic past by visiting Arcos do Cachorro (lava tunnels): the fascinating rock formations reveal this special force of nature. We enjoy a tour through the distillery and discover their special techniques during a tasting of their wonderful products. The next stop is at Criacao Velha for the breathtaking view of the Pico vineyard landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Free time afterwards and you might take part in an optional whale watching cruise. We return to the island of Faial for the evening and that means there's time for a cheeky G&T at Cafe Sport (also known as Peter's Bar), perhaps the most famous sailors' bar in the world.

FAIAL ISLAND – HORTA

General trip information

The climate in the southwest of Portugal can become very hot in July and August, and excursions may start very early in the morning or be reduced in case of extreme weather conditions.

Remember to bring an identity card or a passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the time of entry into the country.

The baggage allowance for the airlines we use for domestic flights on this trip is 20 kg. Exceeding this limit will result in an excess baggage charge, which will be the responsibility of the traveler. However, we must emphasize that, due to the adventurous nature of this trip and the amount of public transportation we use for it, this limit is well above the recommended baggage weight for this tour (15 kg).
