day 1

DAKAR

Welcome to Senegal! We land at the Dakar airport where the transfer to the hotel awaits us; check-in and free time available.

Dinner included. Airport transfer included. It is possible to store luggage at the hotel even before check-in.

day 2

DAKAR – GOREE

This morning we explore Dakar, a major African metropolis: we visit the Plateau area, the Governor's Palace and the Kermel Market. We then reach the port to board a ferry that takes us to Gorée Island, today a tourist destination and once a gathering point for slaves bound for the Americas.

day 3

GOREE – LOMPOUL

This morning we head to the port of Gorée to board the ferry that takes us to Dakar. Once disembarked, we continue our journey on the road towards Lake Retba, a lake with a high salt concentration that tints the waters with this particular shade. Along the coast, we then visit the largest fishing village in Senegal, which we explore on a cart pulled by a donkey that takes us to the local market; here we meet artisans who paint large pirogues with bright colors. Our final stop is the Lompoul Desert which we cross aboard 4x4 vehicles to reach our tented camp.

day 4

LOMPOUL – SAINT LOUIS

Today's destination is Saint Louis, a colonial town that was home to Saint Exupéry, an aviation pioneer and author of The Little Prince. We explore the city aboard a horse-drawn carriage, a traditional means of transport. We'll spend the night in a historic hotel, just like the Aeropostale pilots!

day 5

SAINT LOUIS – FERLO

This morning on the way to the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, a natural oasis on the edge of the desert. The Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is home to about 400 bird species, with pelicans and flamingos being the most numerous. In the afternoon, we reach the Ferlo Desert, where we visit some villages of the Peul ethnicity; we immerse ourselves in their reality, so much so that we can participate in the milking.

day 6

FERLO – KABAKOTO

Today we are visiting the holy city of Touba, where we will experience the great sense of hospitality that characterizes the Murid movement. With full respect for the sanctity, we follow the city's rules: no smoking, wearing revealing clothes, drinking alcohol, or listening to music is allowed.

day 7

PUMPKIN – BANJUL

The first stop of the day is the megalithic site of Sine Ngayene, consisting of 52 circles of megaliths for a total of 1102 carved stones! We then cross the border into The Gambia, headed to the estuary to board the ferry crossing the great river. We disembark at Banjul, to reach our hotel in the Kololi district.

day 8

BANJUL – ZIGUINCHOR

This morning we participate in a birdwatching excursion accompanied by an ornithological guide. We then reach a remote village, where we are invited for lunch with a Senegalese family. In the afternoon, we witness the performance of the masks from the animist culture of the Diola. In the evening, we arrive at our hotel on the banks of the Casamance River.

day 9

ZIGUINCHOR – CASAMANCE – ZIGUINCHOR

The first stop of the day is the clay fortified houses of the Diola, an example of African sculptural architecture. We are then received by the King of the Diola Kingdom, the political and magical-religious leader of the community. In the evening, we return to Ziguinchor.

day 10

ZIGUINCHOR - BISSAU

Early morning departure for a long but interesting day. Crossing the border with Guinea Bissau. The road will take us south, into a unique ecosystem where the Bolon (sea arms) penetrate inland for more than a hundred kilometers, creating a vast area of temporary flooding. The boundaries between salt water, land, and fresh water are uncertain and change with the tides. 23% of Guinea Bissau's territory is underwater during high tide and emerges during low tide... On the way to Bissau, we stop at Bula to meet a traditional king, called Regolo, and learn about the culture of his tribe.

day 11

QUINHAMEL – RUBANE

Today we embark on a motorboat and begin our 4 days of sailing in the Bijagos archipelago, the largest in Africa. Our first stop is the island of Bolama, the former capital of Portuguese Guinea; we stroll among the neo-Palladian style buildings, accompanied by... goats! In the evening, we arrive at the Rubane/Bubaque islands where we stay overnight.

day 12

TIE

Depending on the chosen departure date, we witness the Vaca Bruto ceremony or the nesting of the turtles.

In the first case, a free morning available on the island of Rubane. After lunch, we visit Bubaque, the largest village in the archipelago connected to the mainland by only one ferry trip per week. We then head to an isolated village to witness the Vaca Bruto ceremony.

In the second case, in the morning we visit Bubaque, the largest village of the archipelago connected to the mainland by only one ferry trip a week. We then sail towards Meio and Poilao, a deserted island where at night the turtles take refuge to nest. We witness this natural spectacle in silence, with flashlights in hand. We return to the hotel late at night.

day 13

WE WON

Free day at your disposal to continue exploring the archipelago at your leisure. Opportunity to participate in anexcursion on the island of Orango, inhabited by hippopotamuses.

day 14

BANJUL – BISSAU

Free morning at your disposal to continue exploring Rubane at your leisure. In the afternoon, we board a motorboat that takes us to Bissau, the small capital. Here we take part in a short tour: Bissau Velho, the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral, Fortaleza Amura, the Independence Monument and Che Guevara Square are just some of the attractions we encounter along the way. In the evening, we are escorted to the Bissau airport for the return flight.

General trip information

Yellow fever vaccination: mandatory. Cholera vaccination: not required at the time of writing this note, however, it is advisable to check before departure. Anti-malarial treatment: highly recommended.

Remember to bring a valid passport with an expiration date not less than 6 months from the time of entry into the country.
